The kitchen display

One screen per station: the three lanes, accepting and bumping a ticket, sending an item back, the make list, and the timers.

The kitchen display, or KDS, is one screen for one station. It shows the tickets as they fire and moves them across three lanes as the kitchen works.

It is a light screen on the same cream ground as the rest of Maska. There is no dark mode and no theme switch.

The screen

Across the top: your outlet, a Change station button, the clock, a Sent out button carrying the day’s count, and the account disc holding this display’s Sound on switch.

The station’s name is the page title, with a Board and Make list control beside it and three counts: how many tickets are to accept, how many are preparing, and how many are ready.

The three lanes

Lane What it holds The button
To accept Tickets the kitchen has not taken. Accept
Preparing Tickets being cooked. Mark ready
For pickup Tickets on the pass. Picked up

A ticket sits in the lane of its least advanced line, so a KOT is always read as one thing rather than scattering across the board.

Accepting is one way. There is no un-accept, on purpose. The one step backwards is from For pickup back to Preparing, with the undo button on the card.

Sent out, from the header, lists today’s picked-up tickets for this station and can bring one back onto the pass.

A ticket card

A loud banner across the top for anything that is not dine-in: TAKEAWAY, SWIGGY, ZOMATO. Dine-in gets none, because it is the default. Then the table or the channel, the KOT and order numbers, and the timer.

Each line reads as a quantity and the dish, with its add-ons beneath and every note spelled out in a panel of its own. There is no threshold and nothing to expand: if a guest asked for something, the kitchen sees it.

Sending an item back

While a ticket is still to accept, a line can be sent back: the kitchen cannot make it, so it comes off the bill. The row strikes through and reads “Sent back · off the bill”, and if that empties the ticket, the ticket closes.

Once the bill is raised it is too late, and the screen says so: a manager voids or comps it at the counter instead.

The make list

Make list pools every accepted ticket on this station by item, so the same dish wanted by four tables is one number to cook. Cards show a large quantity, the dish, a BATCH badge where several tickets want it, the variations, which tables they came from, and every note.

Timers

Each card counts up from the moment its KOT fired. It escalates on its own:

  • Normal, a plain chip.
  • Amber, once the ticket is running late. The card gains a ring.
  • Red, once it is properly late.

Both thresholds are set in minutes per outlet, in the console under Settings → Devices & KDS → Kitchen, along with a Sound on red switch. Tickets waiting on the pass never escalate: they are the kitchen’s job done.

Sound

Two chimes, and this display’s own Sound on switch mutes both. A new ticket chime, on by default, sounds once when a KOT appears. An urgency chime, if your outlet turns it on, sounds once when a ticket crosses into red. A screen that reloads never announces the backlog at you.

Choosing the station

Change station opens a list of your stations, each with how many tickets are live and a red dot when something is waiting to be accepted. It takes two taps on purpose, so a stray touch cannot move the board.

If nothing has been set up yet, the screen says so and points where to go: stations are added in the console under Devices & KDS, and which station a dish fires at is set on the dish itself, under Menu.
